Dreams Of A Pale Pink Lake Jacket Front

The Legend

DREAMS OF A PALE PINK LAKE

We thought that we would never see
Fish swimming in a bright pink sea.

And we won’t – the part about the fish swimming. The pink sea is another story. Well, actually a pink LAKE – and it really does exist! Lake Retba is a pink lake in the West African Republic of Senegal. Narrowly separated by narrow dunes from the Atlantic Ocean, it has an abnormally high salt content which attracts the Dunaliella Salina bacteria, which produces a red pigment to aid in absorption of sunlight, and Voila! The color pink! But too salty for the ever-hopeful fishies in Textile Designer Suneetha/Bhaavana’s whimsical
creation in silk employing multiple techniques of fabric origami, fabric sculpting and passementerie. Jewelry artist Ronda Terry’s kiln-fired dichroic glass button adds the perfect finishing touch.

Susan Hollingsworth

Susan Hollingsworth has always had a knack for storytelling. Her years spent living in countries from Europe to Asia introduced her to the ancient practice of fiber art and the techniques that women used to create visual stories – with thread and fabric – passed down to them from their ancestors. During a stint in London, she studied pattern making from the Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, which became the catalyst for SuKaz jackets. Rather than pen and paper, Susan designs wearable pieces of art, each one telling a unique story through the hands of skilled artisans from cultures around the globe.

Each of her exquisite creations is forged using caustic chemicals, 1500 degree heat, and a master’s hand.
